A Bethalto man was beaten to death with a wood-splitting maul Sunday night, and authorities have charged his son with the slaying.
James Lane, 33, of 125 Thompson, Apt. 32, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the beating death of his father, James R. Lane, 63, of 7311 Harris Court in Bethalto.
According to police, the elder Lane was killed in his home with a wood-splitting maul around 10:04 p.m. Lane's mother was also struck by the maul in the attack. She was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released, according to Madison County Sheriff's Capt. Brad Wells



The government has been accused of failing to do enough to tackle fuel poverty.
Friends of the Earth and Help the Aged argued at the High Court in London yesterday that government departments were not doing enough to meet their targets of helping millions of vulnerable citizens who cannot heat their homes adequately.
Michael Fordham, QC, for the campaigners, told Mr Justice McCombe that fuel poverty was 'a blight upon society'. Five million households are expected to be suffering its consequences this winter.
