Wayne County Circuit Judge Diane Hathaway, who was endorsed by the party's influential labor caucus, only narrowly edged colleague Judge Deborah Thomas in voting by delegates.
Hathaway, elected to the Wayne County circuit in 1993, urged Democrats to 'take back the Michigan Supreme Court and make it a people's court.' She accused Taylor of ignoring the interests of ordinary people and siding with 'insurance companies and large corporations.'
Taylor and other Republican-nominated justices have been targeted by Democrats since the late 1990s, including a hugely expensive campaign against Taylor and two other justices in 2000 that featured many of the same themes.
But defeating an incumbent Supreme Court justice is a rare event in Michigan politics, occurring most recently in 1984. In addition to having an opponent named only 60 days before the election, Taylor has raised more than $1.5 million.
The top court slot was the only seriously contested race at the state convention. The convention also featured speeches by Gov. Jennifer Granholm and U.S

Three teenagers are due to appear in court charged with the murder of a 14-year-old boy stabbed while sitting on a bench outside his home.
Shaquille Smith was killed in Hackney, east London, on August 30.
George Amponsah, 18, of Greenwood Road, east London, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from the Hackney area, are due to appear before Thames magistrates.
