BIRMINGHAM, Alabama: Alabama felons eligible to vote in the upcoming election haven t been able to register or had their rights stripped away because the governor s list of disqualifying crimes is overly broad, state court administratorssay.
The governor s list of 444 'crimes of moral turpitude' - which state law says are the only crimes that can disqualify citizens from voting - includes many not previously considered serious enough to cost convicted criminals their voting rights. Among those listed are animal cruelty, shoplifting and illegally setting a brushfire.
The Administrative Office of Courts says the governor didn t have the authority to list so many offenses. It also says the list has been wrongly used for months by county registrars to disqualify an undetermined number of voters ahead of the Nov. 4 presidentialelection
